Kandy: The Central Spot of Sri Lanka

Thursday, July 20, 2017
Kandy is not only located in central Sri Lanka. It is also the central hotspot for traveller's wanting to explore Sri Lanka's main attractions.

Bahriavokanda Vihara Buddha Statue in Kandy, Sri Lanka
You don't have to leave Kandy to do some sightseeing though. Just outside the city centre you'll find the difficult-to-pronounce Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue. The white Buddha is located on a small hill top and stands almost 27 meters high. The entre cost is a mere 250 LKR + a smaller fee for storage of your shoes.
You can enter inside the large statue to visit the shrine created to honor Buddha himself.

Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha) in Kandy, Sri Lanka
Inside the city downtown make sure you visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. To enter wear clothes which cover your knees and shoulders. Entering the temple itself will cost you 1500 LKR. It's a stunning and VERY religious place. But in my opinion overpriced compared to the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue.

Driving tuk-tuk in Kandy, Sri Lanka
Like the rest of Sri Lanka, tuk tuk is the most reliable and easy way to go short distances. In Kandy there are very few to none tuk tuks which drives on meter. Most drivers are friendly and won't overprice you too much. Just make sure you have a fixed price and destination before you ride.

Mahaweli Ganga in Kandy, Sri Lanka
A bit further out from Kandy visit beautiful nature sights like Mahaweli Ganga (River). Just driving through the narrow hill road here is an experience in itself.

Suspension Bridge in Kandy, Sri Lanka
Make sure you stop at the Suspension Bridge located close to Royal Botanical Gardens. The bridge was created for filming Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and was since left for locals to use.

Chipmunk in Kandy, Sri Lanka
I don't know if it's because I'm from Denmark or because I've watched too much Chip 'n' Dale as a kid. But there is quite a good chance of spotting these cute and enjoyable chipmunks around the Kandy area.
