Marvelous Rio de Janeiro

Even though we only spent less than a week here in Rio and the first days were rainy and cloudy....

...the sun eventually showed up and it was absolutely freaking amazing!
With thousands upon thousands of people on the famous Copacabana beach for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final the city was swirling with people from all over the world.

Rio is famous for having incredible beaches but on the very first day here Lasse and I was the only people to visit Copacabana as the rain was pouring down. The rainy weather was so heavy that the streets of Rio were flooded within an hour.

On the day we arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Aninha - whom we'd met in Belo Horizonte - let us know that she'd decided to come to Rio for the great final. Meeting up with Aninha again was the best! We spent countless days hanging on the beaches of Rio, tanning, swimming, playing football and enjoying Brazilian cuisine.

Even though we are backpacking, there's still some tourist stuff you just have to do. So of course we went to the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer). One of the New7Wonders of the World and my very first of these to check off of my bucket list. The statue is incredible, but I think it's the location on a hilltop overlooking Rio, which earned it a place among the other six new wonders of the world.

We also took the time to take the cable cars to the peak of Pão de Açúcar (meaning Sugarloaf Mountain). A spectacular place to watch the sunset from and definitely a must-do attraction in Rio de Janeiro.

We came to Rio for the World Cup Final, but Rio ended up being so amazing that the World Cup kinda faded away. No doubt that watching the final match at the Fan Fest on Copacabana was a thrill, but lying on the beaches of Rio all day with Lasse, Aninha and her friend Sam was just the best.

Tonight we leave for Hong Kong. So long Brazil.
